- AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) focus on being quoted or cited in AI answers.
- AI systems favor clear, specific, well-structured content that directly answers questions.
- Consistent entity information (name, services, locations) across the web builds recognition.
- Structured data, reviews and third-party mentions strengthen trust signals.
- No one can guarantee AI recommendations, but the same work improves classic SEO too.
A growing share of discovery now happens inside AI assistants and AI-generated search results. With hundreds of millions of people using ChatGPT weekly, "Which HVAC company in Phoenix should I call?" is increasingly a question asked of an AI rather than typed into a search box.
Nobody outside these companies knows exactly how each system chooses what to mention, and they change often. But the principles that help are consistent with good SEO, and there’s a lot you can control.
AEO vs GEO vs SEO
| Goal | Where it shows | |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Rank pages in search results | Google / Bing results, map pack |
| AEO | Be the direct answer | Featured snippets, voice assistants, AI Overviews |
| GEO | Be cited or recommended in generated answers | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, AI Overviews |
1. Answer questions directly, near the top
AI systems extract passages that answer a question clearly. Start key pages with a 40-60 word direct answer ("An AI receptionist is…"), then expand. Use question-style headings that match how people ask. Every service page on this site opens with a "Quick answer" block for exactly this reason.
2. Be specific and factual
Vague marketing copy ("we deliver world-class solutions") gives an AI nothing to quote. Specifics do: services, locations, timelines, what’s included, who it’s for, how pricing works. Cite sources for statistics, our AI statistics hub is built this way.
3. Strengthen your entity
- Use the same business name, description and service list everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories.
- Create dedicated pages for each core service and location, with unique content.
- Link your social profiles and use Organization schema with
sameAs. - Earn mentions on reputable third-party sites, industry publications, partners, local press.
4. Use structured data
Schema markup helps machines understand your content. Useful types for service businesses:
- Organization / LocalBusiness, who you are (only use a real address you operate from)
- Service, what you offer and where
- FAQPage, question-and-answer content
- BreadcrumbList, site structure
- Article, blog content with dates and authorship
5. Reviews and reputation
For local recommendations, reviews matter. Ask consistently, respond to every review and make sure your profiles are complete. An automated review-request workflow (for example in GoHighLevel) keeps a steady flow.
6. Make your site easy to read for machines
- Fast, server-rendered HTML with meaningful headings.
- Don’t block reputable AI crawlers in robots.txt unless you intend to.
- Keep an up-to-date sitemap and consider an
llms.txtfile summarizing your key pages. - Show "last updated" dates on content that changes.
7. Measure what you can
Track referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics, monitor branded search, and periodically ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, noting whether and how you appear. Combine this with classic SEO metrics in Search Console.
